Layer 2 Virtual Private LAN Service
Layer 2 Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) is much like an Ethernet switch or hub, except that the ports on that hub can be hundreds of miles apart. VPLS is ideal for linking three to five sites together. Because the network must deliver the Ethernet packets to the correct address, it has to dynamically learn where those addresses are located, making provisioning slightly more complicated. VPLS is great for connecting a central or main serving location (data center) to secondary or remote locations (user sites).
